Michael Pryles, International Arbitrator

Michael Pryles is a leading international arbitrator with offices in Melbourne, Singapore and London. He has extensive experience of ad hoc and institutional arbitrations under the rules of all arbitration institutions.  These include both commercial and investor-state arbitrations. Currently he is Chairman of SIAC, a member of the Board of the Dubai International Arbitration Centre and has held positions with the ICC, LCIA and other organizations. He served for 8 years as a Commissioner with the United Nations Compensation Commission adjudicating claims against Iraq.

 

Harpreet Singh Nehal, Director, Drew & Napier LLC

Mr Harpreet Singh Nehal, SC is a director with Drew & Napier LLC. He holds a Masters' degree from Harvard Law School, was a former Justices' Law Clerk of the Supreme Court of Singapore and one of Singapore's youngest Senior Counsel. He has an active practice in international arbitration, both as counsel and arbitrator, and has been involved in arbitrations in Asia, Africa, Europe and the US. In 2010, Harpreet became one of the first emergency arbitrators appointed under the new SIAC Emergency Arbitrator Rules. Harpreet has been described in the Asia Pacific Legal 500 as "first rate" and a "star", and in Chambers Asia 2010 as "incredibly effective.

 

John Savage, Partner, King & Spalding

Mr John Savage is a partner in King & Spalding’s International Arbitration Practice Group, and leads the firm’s Arbitration Practice in Asia. He has represented governments, corporations and high-net-worth individuals in over 100 international arbitrations, both institutional and ad hoc, including many corporate, construction, energy and investment treaty disputes. In addition to his work as counsel, Mr. Savage has been appointed chairman of the tribunal, sole arbitrator and co-arbitrator in ICC, ICSID, KLRCA, LCIA, SIAC and ad hoc arbitrations.  He is also a director of the SIAC and a member of that institution’s Executive Committee.

 

Lawrence Boo, International Arbitrator, The Arbitration Chambers (Singapore)

Well recognised as one of Singapore’s leading international arbitrators, Professor Lawrence Boo heads The Arbitration Chambers since its founding in 1996. He has mediated over 70 disputes, sat as arbitrator in more than 195 cases and written numerous awards. His cases included those administered by the ICC, CIETAC, SIAC, LCIA, HKIAC, KLRCA and ad hoc arbitrations. He is on the Panel of International Arbitrators and Mediators of the American Arbitration Association (AAA) New York, the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), China Maritime Arbitration Commission (CMAC), Beijing Arbitration Commission (BAC), Korean Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB), the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration (KLRCA) and the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC).He teaches at the Law Faculty of the National University of Singapore and Bond University (Australia). He is also a Director of Maxwell Chambers and a District Judge.

Philip Jeyaretnam, Managing Partner, Rodyk & Davidson LLP

Philip Jeyaretnam, SC is a commercial litigator and arbitration counsel with a focus on construction law.  Admitted to the Singapore Bar in 1988, he was appointed Senior Counsel in January 2003. Mr Jeyaretnam was President of the Law Society of Singapore from January 2004 to December 2007. He was the founding chairman of the Society of Construction Law, Singapore. He is Chairman of the Board of Maxwell Chambers, and has acted as arbitrator under both SIAC and ICC Rules.  He is a member of the Public Service Commission, the constitutional body that oversees the public service in Singapore.

 

Eun-Young (EY) Park, Partner, Kim & Chang

Eun Young Park is a partner of Kim & Chang and co-head of the firm's International Arbitration and Litigation Group. He is also head of the firm's International Trade Group. He concentrates his practice in international arbitration and court proceedings in Korean and other jurisdictions. He has extensive experience as counsel representing multi-national corporations in international arbitrations in various venues under the rules of ICC, LCIA, LMAA, SIAC, UNCITRAL, AAA, SCC, KCAB and Court of Arbitration for Sports. Dr Park is also an arbitrator with the KCAB, SIAC, ACICA, DIAC and a panel of Conciliators at ICSID. He is also Councillor of LCIA Asia Pacific Council. Dr. Park has served as a judge in the Seoul District Court of Republic of Korea. He is currently an adjunct professor of law with SKK University Law School and teaches in various law schools in Korea.

 

Sally Harpole, International Arbitrator, Sally Harpole & Co.

Fluent in Mandarin and Spanish, Ms. Harpole is an international arbitrator, mediator and lawyer with more than 30 years of China experience. A pioneer in the field in the region, she was in the first tranche of non-Chinese lawyers appointed to the CIETAC panel of arbitrators in 1979, coinciding with the country’s “open-door policy” to foreign trade and investment. Ms. Harpole has represented multinational and Chinese entities, and can boast experience as counsel to clients in aviation, nuclear power, the hotel industry, television, film and live entertainment. In addition, Ms. Harpole  is a Visiting Professor and Senior Fellow of Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, Pepperdine University Law School (Asian Study Tour 2003-2010), where she designed a comparative law program introducing the legal systems of Hong Kong and Mainland China.

 

Nakul Dewan, Allen & Gledhill LLP

Nakul Dewan is called to the Bar in both Singapore and India.  His areas of practice include international arbitration and commercial litigation.

Apart from actively practising international arbitrations where he has appeared in cases arising from different jurisdictions, including Singapore, India, Philippines, Malaysia, China and Hong Kong, Mr. Dewan appears before courts in contentions litigation matters.  He has also been involved in advising on two investment treaty arbitrations claims.

Mr. Dewan has also authored a number of articles on international arbitration, which have been published in, amongst others, the International Business Law Journal, Asian International Arbitration Journal, Mealy’s International Arbitrator Report and the Singapore Arbitrator.

Mr. Dewan holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) degree from Shri Ram College of Commerce, University of Delhi, and an LLB degree from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, India. He also holds LLM degrees from New York University School of Law and the National University of Singapore.

 

Hop Dang, Senior Associate, Allens Arthur Robinson

Dr. Hop Dang practices with Allens Arthur Robinson in Hanoi, specialised in infrastructure projects and international commercial arbitration. He has advised on many disputes and arbitrated a number of cases before the Vietnam International Arbitration Centre and the Singapore International Arbitration Centre.  In 2010, he was an advisor to the Vietnamese Government in drafting the Law on Commercial Arbitration. He regularly lectures on arbitration, choice of law and foreign direct investment law in law schools in Vietnam, Singapore and Australia.

 

Anthony (Yuwu) Liu, Partner, King and Wood PRC Lawyers

Mr. Anthony (Yuwu) Liu joined King & Wood PRC Lawyers in 2006 and specializes in international arbitration and litigation. He has represented clients in arbitration cases before China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), the Arbitration Institute of Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, Hong Kong Interenational Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) and etc, involving international sale of goods, Sino-foreign joint ventures, leases, intellectual property, construction projects, domain name disputes and etc. Mr. Liu has also dealt with dozens of litigation cases before Chinese courts around the country. 

Before joining King & Wood, Mr. Liu was a director of the CIETAC Secretariat and had more than 10 years of work experience at CIETAC. He is a listed arbitrator of CIETAC, Singapore International Arbitration Centre, Beijing Arbitration Commission and Xiamen Arbitration Commission. Mr. Liu has published more than 70 awards as presiding arbitrator, sole arbitrator, or co-arbitrator.  Mr. Liu is also a mediator of the Mediation Center of China Chamber of International Commerce (CCOIC), a Neutral of the CIETAC Domain Name Dispute Resolution Center, and associate research fellow in law.

“Insurance arbitration: Lessons from the financial crisis”

 

The Honourable Justice Quentin Loh, High Court of Singapore

Justice Quentin Loh was appointed as Judicial Commissioner on 1 September 2009, and appointed as Judge on 1 June 2010. Justice Loh graduated from the National University of Singapore with a LLB (Hons) in 1974 and has had a distinguished practice in all aspects of construction claims, commercial litigation, arbitration and insurance law. Prior to his appointment to the Bench, Justice Loh led the Construction & Projects and the Insurance & Reinsurance Practice Groups of Rajah & Tann LLP. He was also a key member of the International Arbitration Practice Group of Rajah & Tann LLP. Before joining Rajah & Tann LLP, Justice Loh was the Managing Partner of Cooma Lau & Loh, a firm he co-founded in 1979. Justice Loh was appointed Senior Counsel in January 1999 and is also the author of several books on contracts, insurance and arbitration.

 

Justyn Jagger, Partner, DLA Piper

Justyn is a partner of DLA Piper and is Joint Chairman of DLA Piper's Global Arbitration Group. Justyn has lived and worked in Singapore since 1999 and during that time has conducted a wide range of ICC, SIAC, UNCITRAL, LCIA and ad-hoc arbitrations across Asia with particular emphasis on insurance and reinsurance, construction and oil and gas disputes.

 

Andreas Shell

Global Head of CUO Claims Short-Tail, Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty, Allianz Group (Germany)

Andreas Shell is the Global Head of Claims Short Tail (Property, Engineering, Energy and Marine) for Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty. In 1995 Shell was installed as the Head of Claims for German industrial lines business, subsequently transformed into the Head of Client Services for Allianz Global Risks. In 2001 he was put in charge of Allianz group wide losses in respect of 9/11, which then emerged into the role of Claims Crisis Manager for Allianz Group, which he still holds today. Hurricanes Katrina, Wilma and Rita, European Floods, Australian and New Zealand cat events as well as the current aftermath of the earthquake in Japan fall under his responsibility alongside his claims role. In 2005 readmission to the Munich bar as attorney at  law with various assignments in arbitrations and mediations in the Near and Middle East and Europe. Further Shell conducts internal mediations to resolve intra group conflicts on claims/subrogations. Throughout his career, Shell has published various articles and book chapters on crisis and risk management and has held multiple presentations, speeches and panel discussions on those topics.

 

John Pyall, Senior Manager, Claims and Underwriting Services

John Pyall graduated from Newcastle University and has a Post Graduate degree in Management. He has worked twenty years for Munich RE, starting in their London office then moving to be regional claims manager for South East Asia in Singapore and currently he is the International Claims Coordinator for their Asia Pacific and African regions.

Among other articles, he is author and technical editor of the Chartered Insurance Institute book on Reinsurance and author of the Claims section of Practice of Reinsurance. He has also participated in the books developed by the Advanced Studies Groups of the Insurance Institute of London on Developments in Excess of Loss and Commutations and Run-off Strategies. He is also a member of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators, having participated in both arbitrations and mediations on behalf of Munich RE in property, engineering and reinsurance related matters.

He has lectured for the Chartered Insurance Institute, Singapore College of Insurance, Asia Insurance Review, London Guildhall University and for a number of other clients and societies on different aspects of, claims, wordings and reinsurance.

 

Peter Newall, Managing Director, Claims and Liabilities
Swiss Reinsurance Company

Peter Newall joined Swiss Re Regional office in Hong Kong in September 2002 as Head of Claims and Liabilities for Asia, which extends from India to New Zealand.  He is responsible for the management of the reinsurance claims teams in the Asian business units and is a member of Swiss Re’s Global Executive Claims Team.
Peter has spent most of his career in Asia as an international loss adjuster, having first been posted to Singapore in 1980.  Since then he has been based alternately in Hong Kong and Singapore, handling major losses for the insurance and reinsurance industries throughout Asia.  During his loss adjusting career he also spent three years as an international executive loss adjuster with the Cigna Group of Companies.
Peter holds an honours degree in law, is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters and a recognized European Union loss adjusting expert (FEUDI).

Judith Gill Partner, Allen & Overy

Judith Gill QC is a partner in Allen & Overy's international arbitration group. She has extensive experience in both institutional and ad hoc arbitration including proceedings under ICSID, LCIA, ICC, and AAA Rules. Judith's practice covers a broad range of subjects including energy, insurance, joint ventures, distributorships, healthcare, banking and investment treaty arbitration. Her other credentials include being a Director of the LCIA, a former member of the LCIA Court, a member of the ICC UK Arbitration Group, a Director of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, a Director of the American Arbitration Association and a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies.

 

Mee F Moh, Corporate Counsel, Chevron Downstream Law Function

Meef is Corporate Counsel for Chevron based in Singapore.  She has multi-jurisdictional legal experience in various arbitrations, as counsel both in private practice and now in house, and as arbitrator and mediator.  Her arbitration experience covers projects based out of Asia, Africa, Middle East and Europe. She is on the panel of various regional and international arbitral institutions and was the first woman Council Member of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators.  She is currently the Honorary Secretary of the Singapore Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.    

 

Nikolaus Pitkowitz, Attorney-at-Law, Graf and Pitkowitz

Dr. Pitkowitz serves as arbitrator and party counsel under various international arbitration rules. He is a registered mediator, co-chair of the IBA Mediation Techniques Committee, co-editor of the Austrian Yearbook of International Arbitration, co-organizer of the Vienna Arbitration Days, and a member of the executive board of the Vienna International Arbitral Centre (VIAC).

 

Chelva R. Rajah, Senior Partner, Tan, Rajah & Cheah

Chelva Rajah heads the firm's dispute resolution team having developed a distinguished practice in both litigation and arbitration, particularly in substantial commercial disputes, property-related matters and insolvency. He was the President of the Law Society of Singapore from 1990 to 1992 and was appointed a Senior Counsel on 10 January 1998. Zia Mody, a Senior Partner of AZB & Partners, is a prominent Indian legal consultant.
